Health and Human Resources
Official State Biography of Michael Lewis
When Governor Earl Ray Tomblin asked me if I’d come back to West Virginia, I jumped at the opportunity. I am honored to be the Cabinet Secretary of the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
I am a family physician at heart. I practiced medicine in St. Mary’s, West Virginia, for 10 years. I served on the medical school faculty at West Virginia University in Morgantown and later was in charge of the Charleston branch of the WVU medical school.
Prior to returning home to West Virginia, I was a vice chancellor of health sciences in North Carolina. While in North Carolina, I held several other positions, including leading a new dental school and a new public health program.
Becoming the cabinet secretary is allowing me to reacquaint myself with some old friends and make many new ones.
